Websites rant

If you wonder how to make a great website, I might not be the perfect person to talk to. But I can tell you for sure what your website shouldn't do:

Asking me to allow the website to send me notifications before:

- I read anything on the website
- I intentionally, and without being pushed there by dark pattern, clicked a button saying "Subscribe" or "Notify me"

For this #thuRSSday, I like to recommend the 'Things I learned' feed of @sheogorath.

Or did you know, why the Queens flag never flies half-mast?

Follow this feed to learn things about everything and the kitchen sink.

Can you imagine that? A FOSS health app, published under GPL became victim of its own success.

github.com/Flaque/quirk

It used to be a small app helping people with their Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). But since the app was rather successful in helping people the funding/business model broke and the developers had to search for something else to make their money.

I think it's still worth checking out.

Mhm, I'm currently wondering if it would be a good idea to get rid of a loop in my sudoku solver and instead use events for that. But it would require me to basically implement a circular event structure.

A is subscribed to event b of B. While B is subscribed to event a of A.

And I'm not sure that's a good idea. Thoughts?

Code I want to replace: git.shivering-isles.com/sheogo

Don't be shy with DNS TTLs.

If you have settled your services on one or more IP addresses, push the TTL up. 12-24 hours are no problem. You mitigate almost all service outages from your DNS providers by that.

Main thing you have to keep in mind is that if you want to move a service around, you can either move the IP address with your service or should to lower the TTL at least 12 hours before moving the service.

Two students sit outside a Taco Bell to use Wi-Fi so they can 'go to school' online.

This is California, home to Silicon Valley...but where the digital divide is as deep as ever.

Where 40% of all Latinos don't have internet access. This generation deserves better.

By the way, thanks to the help of @nathand I was able to reproduce the issue earlier today.

I can official say that one shouldn't use the implementation of canarymail for OpenPGP, because it's unaware of how to select the right key. They not only are unable to select the encryption sub key, but also ignore expiry dates and key revocation, making it an actual danger.

There used to be apples which fell down and others which flew up into other space.
Those which flew up did not get to reproduce. So apples evolved to fall down.

If you run a macbook or iOS device and use "canarymail.io/" as mail client, could you please try to send me and OpenPGP encrypted email? I want to verify if they have a major flaw in their implementation.

As I just got an email that was undecryptable.

So admins and moderators of the fediverse, I have a question.
If a instance allows or promote conspiracies and/or denial of the current pandemic, what do you do?

Why?

Another weekend another evening project. Today: A simple container firewall that runs in user space and therefore doesn't need CAP_NET_ADMIN.

Is it as effective as iptables? By no means. But it's most likely sufficient for the majority of use cases.

Articlr about racist, sexist, transphobic, hateful language and online abuse

After reading this yesterday it still creeps me out. Why do we have people like that around? It was a woman that invented the fundamentals of programming so how come there are still idiots out there believing they couldn't program? How come people can be so crazy and just look for someone to talk them down not even because those did anything wrong, but because they exist.

This feels satisfying after all the work. #Lenovo sells laptops with #Fedora on their website. \o/
And as a bonus Fedora contributors get a sizable discount!

:blobfoxlaugh: My TIL articles are a almost random selection of knowledge around all kinds of things. Obviously it has a little bit of a tech touch, but there is so much random other topics mix in, that I really enjoy just reading through the titles.
